Erica Wright, better known as Erykah Badu, grew up listening to ‘70s soul and ‘80s hip hop. Her debut album ‘Baduizm’ was released in 1997; the grooves and production on the album are bass-heavy RnB, but Badu's distinctive voice and eclectic style immediately put her in a league of her own.

Badu opened for D’Angelo at a 1994 show, his manager, Kedar Massenburg, was so impressed with the performance that he signed Badu to his recently formed Kedar Entertainment label, and served as producer for ‘Baduizm’. Badu’s debut album won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, and her single ‘On & On’ took the award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
